Environmental racism in the DMV and abroad
ThinkOcean was proud to present an upcoming webinar opportunity as a part of our One World United By Crisis campaign. This webinar was hosted by our DMV Regional Coordinator, Absa Fall, and is about environmental racism in the DMV and abroad. This webinar took a deep dive into the situation at the Anacostia River before expanding its view and showing how this is a wider problem. We are proud to announce that we have invited two speakers to supplement the information presented by Absa. Our speakers were the Director of River Restoration Programs at the Anacostia Watershed Society, Ariel Trahan, and the Director of Communication at the RAVEN Trust, Andrea Palframan. The webinar took place on Friday, November 13 at 3 PM EST. The recording is at the end of the blog post for those who weren’t able to make it.
Ariel Trahan
Director of River Restoration Programs
Ariel Trahan has been at the Anacostia Watershed Society since 2009 working to engage the community in the restoration of the Anacostia River. In her current role she is responsible for Anacostia Watershed Society’s education, restoration and recreation programming, which covers a wide range of activities including educational boat tours of the Anacostia River, wetland and mussel restoration efforts, and workshops for students and adults on how they can have a positive impact on the watershed. She also serves on the Prince George’s County Public Schools Environmental Literacy Steering Committee, the Mid Atlantic Environmental Literacy Workgroup, and on the board of the D.C. Environmental Education Consortium. Ariel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and History from Macalester College.
Andrea Palframan
Director of Communication
Andrea Palframan is a communications consultant and Director of Communication & Engagement with RAVEN Trust, an impact organization supporting access to justice for Indigenous Peoples. RAVEN upholds environmental rights by engaging the power of the crowd to fundraise, organize, and donate in support of precedent-setting legal challenges to protect ecosystems and strengthen Indigenous sovereignty.
Based on the unceded territories of the Hul’qumi’num-speaking peoples, her creative and digital communications practice is the lovechild of art and activism. She is dedicated to helping agents of change — non-profits, community-based organizations, and social entrepreneurs —develop story-based strategy to move hearts and inspire action.
In addition to developing websites, crafting strategic campaigns and writing reams of copy, Palframan is an award winning documentary film-maker (The Story of A Girl, Raven People Rising), where she combines observant participation with visual storytelling to craft campfire stories for the digital age.
Andrea is passionate about saving seeds, succulent sentences, kindred spirits, and the moment when talk becomes action.
