NIGERIA

ThinkOcean has recently established a new chapter in Nigeria, a country often referred to as the "Giant of Africa."With a population of 213.4 million, 70% of which are young people, this chapter aims to address the issues of ocean and ocean resource misuse and mismanagement, with a particular focus on plastic pollution.

Nigeria's coastal and marine areas, which border the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean, span 853km and include nine out of the nation's 36 states, including Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers. The new chapter will use carefully designed plans and strategies for conservation to achieve its goals, including education through public awareness campaigns aimed at enlightening people, particularly students, teachers, and members of local communities, about the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of conservation.

To impact the country for conservation, the Nigeria chapter will focus on two major means: recycling and upcycling of plastic waste. The network will work closely with recycling companies to connect residential homes and schools with them, ensuring that plastic waste is actively collected and converted into reusable materials. In addition, upcycling will be carried out in multiple states to create high-value products, including large ones such as small hubs, with the use of plastic materials.

Cleanups, artivism, campaigns for policy change, and advocacy for replacing plastic with sustainable materials are other methods that ThinkOcean Nigeria will employ to achieve its goals. A large community will be created, serving as a positive and powerful force in the nation, rapidly bringing about conservation in society.
