CUHK

ThinkOcean CUHK is one of the ThinkOcean chapters based in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which was opened in 2019. Throughout 4 years of functioning, ThinkOcean CUHK was able to host several beach cleanups, virtual webinars, and interactive events, including Shark Talks, ArchiREEF webinar, HKU-CUHK-HKBU- Hike Exit beach clean up, and many more. Consisting of 4 teams, namely Beach Clean Up, Virtual Events, Social Media, and Marketing Teams, ThinkOcean CUHK mainly strives to raise awareness about environmental issues throughout CUHK and Hong Kong.

Projects:

  1. The ThinkOcean CUHK chapter collaborated with OIKOS Hong Kong for a beach cleanup event, which saw participation from more than 15 students from various universities and secondary schools in Hong Kong.

  2. ThinkOcean CUHK hosted a talk show on "Food Sustainability" featuring Ms. Punam Chopra, Founder of SpiceBox Organics, a USDA-certified organic food store and café in Hong Kong known for its high-quality, tasty, and environmentally-friendly food.

  3. ThinkOcean CUHK organized a talk show on the topic "Sharks: Why do we need them?" led by Andrea Richey, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, which covered the cultural background of shark finning, its impact on both sharks and the environment, and actions that have been and can be taken to make changes to the shark finning industry.

  4. ThinkOcean CUHK organized a virtual webinar with ArchiREEF's co-founder and CEO, Ms. Vriko Yu, and Operations Manager, Natalie Man, on 3D-printed coral reefs. ArchiREEF is a technology startup that invented the world's first 3D-printed terracotta reef tiles, which mobilize blue carbon to facilitate coral restoration and ensure a higher survival rate for corals.

  5. A joint workshop on oyster restoration was organized by ThinkOcean CUHK, ThinkOcean HKU, and Hong Kong Marine Ecological Association, which focused on the deployment of oyster shells and their monitoring process.

  6. ThinkOcean CUHK hosted a talk with Anne-Claire from Phenix, a local food rescue app that delivers mystery baskets at discounted prices, to raise awareness about food waste issues and solutions in Hong Kong.

  7. A beach clean-up event was organized by ThinkOcean CUHK in collaboration with HikeExit, HKBU, HKU, and TWC on the East Dam Beach. The event collected a total of 290.7 Kg of trash, contributing towards keeping Hong Kong's beaches clean and protecting its marine life.
